3語服務 藏族警員昂旺 立志竭盡所能助華人
皇后區貝賽111分局的華裔藏族警員昂旺．白瑪達傑出生在西藏，從小學習普通話，他以身為華裔為榮，曾加入軍隊，之後投身警界，員立志盡自己所能更好地幫助華人。
昂旺在中國西藏的一個小村莊出生和成長，2004年，17歲的他和家人移民美國，定居北卡州。在北卡讀完大學後，昂旺加入美國軍隊。
他說自己一開始是海軍，後來自願成為野戰兵，去過伊拉克、阿富汗等國的戰場，還去過非洲和亞洲的一些國家」；他表示，「我願意衝在最前線，而且當時單身，沒有顧慮，從沒害怕過。」
昂旺表示，不少華人對當兵有誤區，認為亞裔在軍隊裡常會被排擠、欺負，其實部隊裡軍紀很嚴，更明令禁止種族歧視，有很多相應的法規和條款；軍隊非常重視相關投訴，種族歧視和毒品一樣，在軍隊中是零容忍，一旦違反，就會被開除。
「十餘年的從軍經歷讓我更加珍惜和尊重生命、心懷感恩。當兵是很好的歷練，可以學到團隊精神、鍛煉自我約束，還可提高英文水平，無論是否退役，都可以讓自己的未來有更多、更好地選擇。」
昂旺2016年1月加入紐約市警(NYPD)，警校畢業後分配到111分局任巡警，現仍是預備役，部隊有需要時，就會回去。
在大學主修經濟管理，部隊裡又進修了政治學；談到為何加入警界，他說，少年來美時的前幾年，經歷一些不愉快的事情，常看到華人由於語言障礙、對法律制度的不了解，無法維護自身權益，「我想幫助同胞，因此決定當警察。」
能流利講普通話、藏語和英語的昂旺，是111分局目前唯一擁有市警頒發的中文翻譯證書的警員，「我想有更多的發揮空間，所以努力考取了證書，沒有證書雖也可以翻譯，但是翻譯過程不具有法律效力。」轄區內的華裔越來越多，他工作中幾乎每天都會用到普通話，有時下班後也會幫助當班警員翻譯。
昂旺說，「111分局局長霍爾(John Hall)重視亞裔社區，知道我會中文，便派我與社區的華裔商家、民眾溝通，宣導防止罪案」。近期有些中餐外賣店受到騷擾，他走訪了轄區內所有中餐外賣店，告訴店主，「遭侵犯時找警方，我們會幫助他們。」
他說，有一次出警處理一起交通事故，到現場後當事人看到他，第一句話就是「你是真警察嗎」，讓他感觸很深，讓他更希望改變一般人對亞裔的刻板印象。
從那次以後，只要有機會，昂旺都會鼓勵華人加入警界、考取公務員；他說，「其實並不難，如果我能做到，相信人人都能做到。」
參軍的經歷也讓昂旺在當警察以及生活中遇到任何困難時，都能克服。昂旺表示，「認識我的人都知道，我每天都開開心心，遇事永遠持客觀和積極的心態，我要在力所能及範圍內，更好地幫助華人、服務社區。」
